LEARN ONE OF THE ACTING TECHNIQUES THAT HELPS CREATE POWERFUL AND TRUTHFUL ACTORS.

This intensive course will teach you to get out of your head and act truthfully and instinctively from your gut. Actors will learn to be truly present in the moment and to be specific and detailed in their acting choices.

You will learn the foundation of Sanford Meisner: Exercises in repetition, independent activities, emotional preparation & scene work.

The second half of the Meisner Summer Intensive consists of scene and monologue work, during which time you will apply what you have learned in the exercises to your roles.

The training begins with an intensive improvisational work, including the ”Repetition Exercise” in which actors learn to take the attention off themselves and put it on their partners’ real behavior, allowing it to affect them and cause a truthful reaction.

Students then apply this strong beginning in their ability to “live truthfully” to modern scene work.

¿CÓMO Y CUÁNDO EMPEZÓ EN LA INDUSTRIA DE HOLLYWOOD?

Estaba actuando en Los Ángeles en los 90 y varios actores me pedían que los entrenara. Me di cuenta de que era muy buena en eso y que realmente estaba ayudando a actores a obtener partes en varias categorías. Luego de esto, recuerdo específicamente que estaba en la playa en Malibú (siempre es en la playa donde hago decisiones grandes de mi vida), cuando tomé la decisión de enseñar.

¿A QUÉ LE ATRIBUYE EL ÉXITO DE CONVERTIRSE EN ENTRENADORA DE ARTISTAS DE LA TALLA DE SALMA HAYEK, PENÉLOPE CRUZ, GERARD BUTLER Y CHRIS ROCK, ENTRE OTROS?

Yo enseño una técnica, les doy nuevos instrumentos para agregar a la colección de talentos de cada artista que viene a mí. Constantemente estoy inspirada por otros artistas. Trato de pasar mucho tiempo yendo a festivales de cinematografía, ver espectáculos de Broadway, viajar internacionalmente para enseñar, y conocer a otros artistas e intercambiar ideas creativas. Pero pienso que lo que en verdad me hace exitosa es que siempre estoy tratando de crecer como artista y aprender yo misma; también soy un estudiante. Ahorita estoy escribiendo y trabajando en nuevos proyectos, lo cual siempre va mas allá de mis metas.

DURANTE SU EXPERIENCIA CON ARTISTAS CONOCIDOS, ¿CUÁL HA SIDO EL MAYOR RETO AL MOMENTO DE ENTRENARLOS?

Cuando trabajas con actores famosos, actores que han ganado óscares, tienes que aceptar que hay algo que ellos ya saben muy bien, y ayudarlos significa tratar de hacerlos ver opciones o tomar decisiones que a lo mejor antes no pensaron. Muchas veces son exitosos porque son excepcionales haciendo determinadas cosas, y que ellos tomen riesgos y se atrevan a realizar cosas diferentes, resulta escalofriante. Fortalecerlos, retarlos e inspirarlos a tomar esos riesgos, a veces es algo retador.

¿QUÉ PELÍCULAS HA PRODUCIDO Y ACTUALMENTE EN QUÉ TRABAJA?

He dirigido y producido tres películas: Cómo salir en una cita en Queens , Hola Herman , y El Bandido Sabueso. En este momento estoy trabajando en dos películas. Una es de acción política llamada Peril of a Godsend y la otra es de suspenso supernatural llamada Impulsos Malos (‘Bad Impulse’). Una de las películas será grabada este año y la otra, para el próximo.

¿CUÁL CONSIDERA QUE ES SU MISIÓN EN LA VIDA?

Tengo varias misiones en mi vida. Ser una mamá genial, ser una maestra excepcional y contar historias que puedan contribuir con la humanidad (ser una gran cuentista).

¿A QUÉ VIENE MICHELLE DANNER A PANAMÁ?

Voy a enseñar ‘La Caja Dorada’ dos días intensivos de actuación. Este taller enseña diferentes técnicas de actuación y herramientas que se pueden usar para formar su propia caja de herramientas. Ayudo a desarrollar técnicas de actuación que se pueden usar en un rol o escena, sin importar si es cinema, televisión o teatro. Estas técnicas de actuación están basadas en las creaciones de Meisner, Strsber, Adler, Hagen, Chekhov y Stanislavsky. Traigo todos los elementos del arte y ayudo a actores a descubrir su creatividad y pasión por este trabajo. La clase es apoyada por análisis y discusión de varios filmes con actuaciones de Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Dean, y muchos otros actores.

¿EXISTE UNA FORMA ESPECIAL PARA PREPARARSE COMO ACTOR?

Sí, por supuesto. Hay técnicas que yo enseño en ‘La Caja Dorada’ para prepararse como actores, incluyendo cómo analizar un guión y cómo crear personajes inolvidables.

¿QUÉ CONSEJOS PUEDE DARLE A AQUELLOS QUE DESEAN SER ACTORES O ACTRICES, PERO ENFRENTAN DIFICULTADES DIVERSAS?

Nunca te des por vencido. Nunca dejes que nadie te diga que no puedes hacerlo. Tú tienes algo que decir y debes luchar contra cualquier obstáculo para llegar a donde deseas. Necesitas asegurarte de que eres escuchado.

‘LA CAJA DORADA’ LLEGA A PANAMÁ

El taller The Golden Box (La Caja Dorada) es organizado con el fin de ofrecer entrenamiento profesional al talento nacional y dar a conocer y recaudar recursos para proyectos como ‘iCine, iDeas en Positivo’, señala Eric Quintero Cedeño, director ejecutivo de Ideas Media Org., organizadores del evento.

Detalla que el taller también busca impulsar ‘la nueva producción audiovisual el Documental sobre Cetáceos: Panamá el recorrido de las Ballenas, en conjunto con la Universidad Marítima y otras ONG, el cual se enfoca en dar a conocer al mundo el compromiso que tiene Panamá en la conservación de esta especie’.

Pueden participar productores y directores, actores profesionales o aficionados y estudiantes del medio. Tendrá la participación de asistentes de Costa Rica, Colombia y España.

El taller se ha dictado en Europa, Toronto, Vancouver, Dubái, Nueva York y países de Latinoamérica.

7 Schritte für Authentizität in deinen Auditions

Nach 27 Jahren als Schauspielcoach habe ich festgestellt wie viele Schauspieler Probleme damit haben ihr authentisches Ich während einer Audition zu vermitteln. Sie bereiten sich zwar auf das Material vor, aber oftmals höre ich „ich habe nicht alles gegeben.“ Hier sind sieben Schritte, die dir dabei helfen, dich zu erinnern du selbst zu sein.

1. Nimm den Druck.
Du musst dir vor Augen halten, dass es nur eine von vielen Auditions ist die du im Laufe deines Lebens haben wirst. Wenn du zu viel Druck auf dich ausübst, kannst du nicht im Moment leben und wirklich präsent sein. Du verurteilst dich selbst und alles was du tust und denkst vermutlich, dass alle anderen dich ebenfalls verurteilen.

Deshalb musst du den Ort in dir finden, wo du dir den Druck nehmen und die Ansprüche loslassen kannst, die du an dich stellst, wenn es darum geht zu strahlen, die Audition zu rocken oder den Job zu buchen.

2. Denke daran zu atmen.
Dies ist natürlich auf jeder Liste ganz oben. Du musst dich daran erinnern, dass du ohne deine Atmung keinen Zugang zum gegenwärtigen Moment hast. Atmen beruhigt dich und bringt dich immer zurück zu deiner Mitte. Ohne deine Atmung bist du abgekapselt und unauthentisch, deshalb solltest du dir ihr ständig bewusst sein.

3. Versuche nicht es allen recht zu machen.
Du musst es niemandem recht machen außer dir selbst. Wenn du versuchst einem Casting Direktor, Agenten, Producer, Regisseur oder Manager zu gefallen, mit der Intention positives Feedback zu bekommen, bist du zum Scheitern verurteilt. Kümmere dich nicht darum was andere denken. Kümmere dich nicht darum gemocht zu werden. Dies wird dir nur im Weg stehen dein authentisches Ich zu präsentieren.

4. Betrete den Raum mit deiner Energie.
Honoriere deine derzeitigen Gefühle. Versuche dahinterzukommen was wirklich in dir vorgeht. Wenn du schlechte Laune hast, wenig Energie, gerade eine Trennung durchmachst oder das Gefühl hast, dass dein Leben gerade bescheiden läuft, solltest du einen Weg finden, deine Laune zu heben.

Fühle dich nicht genötigt ein glückliches Gesicht aufzusetzen, fröhlich zu sein und auszusehen, als ob du eine gute Zeit hast. Das kommt künstlich rüber. Finde etwas in dem Vorsprechen, dass dich begeistert. Du bist dort, um etwas zu verfolgen das du liebst – das ist die perfekte Energie.

5. Versuche nicht perfekt zu sein.
Perfektionist zu sein wenn es um Schauspiel geht, ist hier nicht hilfreich. Als ich in New York vorsprach, sorgte ich dafür, mich vorher nicht zu sehr zu stressen. Wenn meine Audition um 15:00 Uhr war, habe ich vorher nur sehr wenig unternommen. Ich wollte mich nicht überanstrengen, sodass ich später die nötige Energie für das Vorsprechen haben würde. Ich erinnerte mich daran durchzuatmen. Als es dann an der Zeit war, habe ich das alles vergessen. Ich war angespannt und verschlossen. Meine besten Auditions waren die, bei deinen ich nichts kontrollieren konnte, wenn mein Leben um mich herum auseinanderfiel. Mein Leben war ein Durcheinander und ich übte keinerlei Druck auf mich aus eine perfekte Audition abzuliefern. Das war die Wahrheit. Das war authentisch!

6.Erlaube dir verletzlich zu sein.
Es geht nicht darum zu weinen oder sentimental zu sein – es geht darum dir zu erlauben in den Ort in dir einzutauchen, der zerbrechlich und empfindlich ist. Diesen Ort musst du beruhigen, lieben, ihm zuhören und erlauben an die Oberfläche zu treten.

7. Finde die Verbindung.
Letztendlich ist es toll den Job zu kriegen. Aber es ist genauso wichtig dafür zu sorgen, dass sich die Person vor der du vorsprichst, sich auch für andere Jobs an dich erinnert. Um dies zu erreichen, solltest du eine Verbindung zum Casting Direktor aufbauen, zum Material, zum Assistenten der dich in Empfang genommen hat, und jeder Person, der du begegnest. Wenn du das Gefühl hast, du hast diese Verbindung aufgebaut, dann bist du mit deinem authentischen Selbst aufgetreten.

7 Steps to Bring Authenticity to Auditions

After 27 years of being an acting coach, I’ve recognized how many actors have struggled with conveying their authentic selves during an audition. They prepare the material but I often hear, “I didn’t show up with all of myself.” Here are seven steps to help remind you to be yourself.

1. Remove the pressure.
You have to remind yourself that it’s only an audition and you will have many more in your life. When you put too much pressure on yourself, you can’t be in the moment, show up, and be present. You’re judgmental of yourself and everything you do, and you probably feel as if everyone else is judging you.

So you have to get to that place inside where you release the pressures and demands that you ask of yourself to shine, nail the audition, and book the job.

2. Always breathe.
This, of course, is at the top of every list. You have to remind yourself that without your breath you can’t access the true place you’re in. Breathing calms you and always centers you. Without fully having your breath, you are disconnected and inauthentic, so you need to check in with it all of the time.

3. Don’t try to please.
You’re not there to please anyone but yourself. Whenever you try to please a casting director, agent, producer, director, or manager with the intention of getting good feedback, you’re bound to fail. Don’t worry about what other people think. Don’t worry about being liked. This will only get in the way of you being your authentic self.

4. Come in with the energy that you have.
Be where you are emotionally in the moment. Try to hook into what’s really going on with you. If you’re in a bad mood, if your energy is low, you just went through a breakup, or if you feel that your life sucks at that particular moment, you want to find a way to shift that.

Don’t feel that you have to put on a happy face, be jovial, and look like you’re having fun. All that extra stuff comes across as fake. Find something that excites you about the audition. You are there to pursue something that you love—that’s energy.

5. Don’t try to be perfect.
This is when being a perfectionist in acting isn’t helpful. When I auditioned in New York, I would make sure I wouldn’t stress myself out too much before it. If my audition were at 3:00 pm, I would do very little ahead of time. I didn’t want to exert myself so I would have the energy for the reading. I would remind myself to breathe. Then when the time came, everything flew out the window. I was tense and I shut down. My best auditions were when I couldn’t control anything, when my life was falling apart around me. My life was a mess and I didn’t pressure myself into giving a perfect reading. That was the truth. That was authentic!

6. Allow yourself to be vulnerable.
It’s not about crying or being sentimental—it’s about letting yourself go into a place that’s fragile and delicate. That place you need to soothe, love, listen to, and allow yourself to come to the surface.

7. Connect.
At the end of the day, it’s great to get the job. But what’s equally important is to get the person you’re auditioning for to remember you for other jobs. For that, you want to connect with the casting director with the material, with the assistant that checked you in outside, and each person you encounter. If you feel you’ve achieved that connection, then you showed up with your authentic self.

En 27 ans d’expérience de coach d’acteurs, je sais que de nombreux acteurs ont beaucoup de mal à montrer leur vrai potentiel et leur vrai « moi » dans la salle d’audition. Voici sept étapes qui vous aideront à vous souvenir d’être vous-même.

1. Faîtes tomber la pression

Vous devez prendre conscience que ce n’est qu’une audition, et que vous en aurez beaucoup d’autres dans votre vie. Lorsque vous mettez trop de pression sur vous-même, vous ne pouvez pas être dans la situation, ni être vraiment présent. Vous vous jugez et vous jugez toutes vos actions, et vous avez l’impression que tout le monde vous juge également.

Il faut donc que vous atteigniez un calme intérieur qui relâchera la pression, et vous devez vous ordonner d’être confiant, de réussir votre casting et d’obtenir le rôle.

2. Respirez, toujours

Respirer est, bien entendu, la première chose à faire. Sans le souffle et la respiration, vous ne pourrez pas être dans l’état dans lequel vous devez vous trouver. Respirer vous calme et vous permet de trouver votre centre. Sans avoir pleinement votre souffle, vous serez déconnecté et faux. Vous devez donc tout le temps revenir à votre respiration.

3. N’essayez pas de plaire ou de contenter les autres

Vous n’êtes pas là pour plaire à qui que ce soit, sinon à vous-même. Si vous essayez uniquement de plaire à un directeur de casting, un agent, un producteur, un réalisateur ou un manager en espérant avoir des bons retours, vous n’arriverez à rien. Ne faîtes pas attention à ce qu’on peut penser de vous. Ne cherchez pas à être apprécié. Ce n’est qu’ainsi que vous pourrez véritablement être vous-même.

4. Venez avec votre énergie

Soyez à l’écoute de votre énergie et de vos émotions au moment présent. Essayez d’être en accord avec ce qui se passe intérieurement. Si vous êtes de mauvaise humeur, si vous avez peu d’énergie, si vous venez de rompre, ou si vous trouvez que votre vie est pourrie à ce moment particulier, vous devez trouver un moyen de changer votre état.

Ne faites pas semblant d’être heureux, ou de sourire, car on verra que ces émotions sont fausses. Trouvez quelque chose qui vous excite et vous inspire dans ce casting. Vous êtes là pour faire quelque chose que vous aimez, c’est déjà une énergie positive.

5. N’essayez pas d’être parfait

C’est là qu’être un acteur perfectionniste ne vous aide pas. Quand je passais des castings à New-York, je m’assurais de ne pas stresser longtemps avant l’audition. Si mon casting était à 15h, je faisais très peu de choses en avance. Je ne voulais pas me démener avant pour avoir de l’énergie lors de l’audition. Je faisais bien attention à respirer. Puis, lorsque c’était mon tour, je me suis crispée et l’audition a été désastreuse. Mes meilleurs castings étaient toujours lorsque je ne contrôlais rien du tout, quand ma vie partait dans tous les sens. Ma vie était compliquée et je ne me rendais pas malade avec l’idée de faire une audition parfaite. J’étais sincère. C’était authentique !

6. Autorisez-vous d’être vulnérable

Je ne parle pas de pleurer, ou d’être sentimental. Il faut atteindre cet endroit délicat et fragile. Cet endroit précis où vous devez vous laisser aller, aimer, écouter, et laisser votre « moi » surgir.

7. Entrez en contact

Oui, c’est bien d’obtenir le rôle. Mais il est tout aussi important que le directeur de casting se souvienne de vous et vous appelle pour d’autres castings. Pour cela, vous devez entrer en contact avec le directeur de casting, avec son assistant, avec chaque personne que vous croisez. Si vous estimez avoir établi un contact, dans ce cas vous êtes venu sincère et authentique.
